DTC brand Material, best known for elevated-yet-affordable kitchen necessities from knives to cookware, this week launches its first foray into tableware as part of a collaboration with Seoul-based ceramicist Soil Baker. The new collection includes a series of ceramic bowls and plates, with pieces including The Full Plate, The Half Plate, The Open Bowl, and The Round Bowl. According to the brand, each item is, “lightweight yet sturdy enough for everyday use, as well as dishwasher- and microwave-safe. This collection is the first of a number of Material tabletop launches expected in 2021.”

The new tableware line was produced in collaboration with Seoul-based Soil Baker, and each shape belonging to the collection was hand-thrown on a potter’s wheel by Founder Hye-Rin Yang. The clay used in the Material and Soil Baker collaboration is a combination of five types of natural Korean soil, which is then formed and baked using traditional firing techniques and hand-finished for a unique surface. While, like Material’s other kitchen offerings, the new ceramic tableware line is elevated, according to Yang, “I wanted to make something casual for everyday use.”
